Lanzhou straddles the Yellow River at the heart of the ancient Silk Road — the only major Chinese city built along both banks of the river considered the cradle of Chinese civilisation. For thousands of years this was where caravans paused, cultures merged, and merchants exchanged not just goods but ideas, music, and faith. Today Lanzhou is a city of dramatic contrasts: rust-red canyon walls, a thundering river, and a cultural tapestry woven from Han, Hui, Tibetan, and Central Asian threads.

Our Lanzhou Camp follows the river as its guiding thread. Students visit the Liujiaxia Hydropower Station and the confluence of the Yellow and Tao Rivers, carve traditional Lanzhou gourds, and trace Silk Road trade routes through hands-on negotiation simulations. International leadership workshops challenge students to communicate across languages and cultures — reflecting exactly what this city has done for millennia.

The camp's closing journey takes students to Bingling Temple, where 1,600-year-old Buddhist sculptures emerge from canyon walls beside the Yellow River — a powerful final reminder that the greatest human achievements always emerge at crossroads.
